Customization can solve an awkward room, but it raises measurement responsibility and reduces the safety of casual returns. The official FAQ provides unusually concrete timing, fee and warranty details that should be calculated before finalizing a custom configuration.

Research snapshot
| Field | Current official information | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Production model | Made to order with customization | Longer planning and specification responsibility |
| Return days 1–14 | Full refund less shipping under current FAQ | Return logistics remain material |
| Return days 15–100 | Refund less 10% processing fee and shipping | Custom price makes fee meaningful |
| Failed-fit delivery | FAQ cites a $400 failed-delivery/fit charge | Route measurement is essential |
| Frame/suspension | Limited lifetime warranty | Read remedy, ownership and exclusions |
| Fabric/cushion | One-year coverage; sofa-bed mechanism listed as 10 years | Components have different terms |
Use customization to solve a measured problem
Start with room, route and desired posture, then choose width/depth options. Custom sizing is valuable when it creates a specific clearance or seat fit; it adds complexity when changes are aesthetic only.
Request the final dimension drawing and compare it with the order summary. Verify orientation, arm, cushion, upholstery and leg selections before production begins.
Measure the delivery route more rigorously
A custom sofa that fits the wall can still fail at the door, landing or elevator. Record clear openings, diagonal depth and the largest non-removable component. BenchMade’s current FAQ references a significant failed-fit charge.
Send route photographs and measurements to the brand when uncertain and retain the response. Do not assume legs, arms or backs detach.
Interpret return windows in dollars
The current FAQ distinguishes the first 14 days from days 15–100, when a 10% processing fee applies; shipping is deducted. Calculate those amounts on the actual custom order rather than treating 100 days as risk-free.
Check one-return-per-household or other limits in the current terms. Keep packaging and initiate the process exactly as instructed.
Separate structural and soft-goods coverage
Limited lifetime frame/suspension coverage is stronger than the one-year fabric and cushion term, but “lifetime” still has definitions, exclusions and remedies. Normal cushion softening and upholstery changes may fall outside defect coverage.
For sleeper configurations, verify that the listed ten-year mechanism coverage applies to the exact product and whether mattress/fabric coverage differs.
Build a specification record
Save the upholstery name, dye lot if supplied, cushion construction, frame dimensions and care guide. Order swatches under the room’s actual light and apply only approved cleaning tests.
Ask about replacement cushions, slipcovers, legs and fabric yardage before ordering. Custom ownership is easier when service parts are available.

Frequently asked questions
Can a custom BenchMade sofa be returned?
Current official FAQ provides return windows with shipping deductions and a 10% processing fee after day 14; reopen terms before ordering.
Does lifetime warranty cover fabric?
No. The official FAQ separates frame/suspension coverage from shorter fabric and cushion coverage.
Why does failed fit matter so much?
Made-to-order upholstery can be large and costly to reroute or return. The route must be measured independently of room fit.
Is the sofa tested by AboutSofa?
No. This profile is based on current official documentation.
