Identify the actual wood system
Ask for species, not simply hardwood. Oak, ash, beech, maple, walnut, rubberwood and other woods differ in density, grain and price, but species alone still does not prove good construction. Plywood may appear in seat decks or concealed panels for dimensional stability.
Look for a material map. Marketing that says “solid wood frame” may still include engineered side panels, and that can be appropriate when disclosed. The concern is vague substitution at stressed joints.
Inspect joinery and movement
High-load corners should resist racking. Sit in several positions, push gently across the frame and listen for clicks. On a visible frame, inspect whether rails meet cleanly, bolts seat properly and legs are integrated or securely attached.
Traditional joinery is not automatically superior if poorly executed; reinforced bolts can make knock-down designs easier to move and repair. The useful question is how the joint handles repeated vertical and sideways loads.
Evaluate finish as a wear surface
Wood arms receive skin oil, cups, pet claws and cleaning products. Ask whether the finish is lacquer, oil, wax or another system and how scratches or water marks are repaired. Dark stain may reveal pale scratches; open-pore finishes can show grime.

Visible wood sofas often use loose cushions on a platform, webbing or springs. Test whether the front rail presses the thighs after several minutes and whether cushions slide. Check ties, hook-and-loop strips or nonslip layers.
Record cushion thickness, foam/wrap and replacement dimensions. A frame can last decades while custom-shaped cushions become the limiting service part.
Plan moves and repairs
Measure the largest rigid piece and whether arms, backs or legs detach. Exposed frames can be bulky despite visual lightness. Protect protruding rails during delivery and confirm how finish damage is handled.
Ask for spare glides, bolts and cushions. Keep assembly instructions and finish name. A sofa designed to be disassembled with reusable hardware is often easier to relocate than a glued one-piece frame.
