The same limitation applies to other textile figures. Lightfastness addresses color change under a specified light exposure, while abrasion testing examines wear caused by repeated rubbing. These results are useful only when the specification identifies the test method, scale, and exact fabric tested.
This guide draws on the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s residential upholstery document, textile-manufacturer guidance from Kvadrat and KING, and a specialist comparison of abrasion methods from Fabric Resource. These sources serve different markets and commercial roles. They do not provide a universal formula for converting every result into years of sofa life—or for converting one test system into another.
Start by checking whether the specifications are comparable
Before deciding that one swatch has the stronger specification, look for six pieces of information:
- Performance property: pilling, lightfastness, abrasion, tear strength, or another characteristic.
- Test method: the named ASTM, ISO, EN, or other procedure—not merely “laboratory tested.”
- Result: the grade, number of cycles, double rubs, or other reported outcome.
- Scale or endpoint: what the numbers mean and whether testing ended because of damage, a visual change, or a predetermined limit.
- Tested material: the exact finished fabric, ideally including its collection name, construction, finish, backing, and colorway.
- Intended-use classification: any claim that the result is suitable for residential, contract, or another use, together with the scheme making that classification.
The AHFA Woven & Knit Residential Upholstery Fabric Standards & Guidelines is an industry document rather than a consumer regulator’s rulebook. It also distinguishes between standards and guidelines within the document. That is a useful reminder not to treat every listed practice as a mandatory legal threshold or universal pass-fail requirement.
Test names can also vary by market, as KING’s manufacturer guide to furniture-fabric testing notes. If two specifications show different methods, do not rank the fabrics simply by choosing the larger number.
A fast comparison example
Suppose Fabric A lists “pilling: 4,” while Fabric B lists “pilling resistant.” Fabric A offers more information, but the grade is still incomplete without its method and scale. Fabric B provides no result that can be compared at all.
If Fabric C lists 50,000 Martindale cycles and Fabric D lists 50,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs, the matching numbers do not make the results equivalent. The machines, rubbing actions, abradants, loads, reporting units, and failure criteria can differ.
What a sofa fabric pilling rating tells you
Pilling is a visible surface change caused when loose or protruding fibers become entangled through rubbing. It can appear as fuzz, small balls, or a generally roughened surface. The issue may be cosmetic before the textile is close to wearing through, which makes the pilling result particularly relevant if you are sensitive to an untidy or prematurely aged appearance.
The AHFA residential upholstery document places pilling in a guideline and references a defined brush-pilling procedure. Under the ASTM D3511 grading convention used there, the visual scale runs from severe pilling at the low end to no pilling at the high end. AHFA’s guideline identifies Class 3 after the specified 30-minute procedure as its minimum criterion. That criterion should remain attached to this method and industry document; it is not a universal translation for every pilling test used worldwide.
Other technical sheets may cite another procedure in the ISO 12945 family or a different apparatus. Kvadrat’s fabric-performance guide describes pilling resistance as its own performance category and presents a five-grade scale in which the higher result is better. That direction is useful only after you confirm that your specification uses the same kind of scale.
A pilling grade can help answer:
- How did the sample’s surface look after the specified rubbing procedure?
- Did it meet a criterion defined by the cited standard or supplier?
- How do two exact textiles compare when tested by the same method and conditions?
It does not establish resistance to:
- fading or color transfer;
- staining and difficult cleaning;
- tearing, seam opening, or yarn slippage;
- snagging from claws, buckles, or sharp objects;
- flattening or loss of pile;
- complete wear-through; or
- changes to cushions and other parts of the sofa.
A grade near the favorable end of its scale is preferable when all other test details match. It is not proof that you will never see a pill in normal use. Clothing, throws, dust, cleaning practices, friction, and the location of use may differ from the controlled test.
Lightfastness matters when the sofa receives regular daylight
Lightfastness measures how well a textile’s color resists change under a specified exposure. It is the result to prioritize when your sofa will receive regular daylight, particularly if preserving an even color is important to you.
Kvadrat describes lightfastness using the blue wool scale, which runs from 1 at the lower end to 8 at the higher end. Check the named method before applying that interpretation: a result on another scale may use different endpoints or conditions.
Lightfastness is not a general durability score. It does not tell you whether the textile will pill, become threadbare, clean easily, or maintain seam strength. Nor does a favorable laboratory result promise no fading in a particular room. Actual exposure changes with glazing, window treatments, season, sofa position, and the duration and intensity of light.
Confirm that the result applies to the exact colorway, not just the fabric collection. Color performance may depend on the dye and shade, so a result for navy should not automatically be transferred to ivory or red unless the supplier says that the reported value covers those colors.
For a sofa near a window, ask the seller:
- What lightfastness method was used?
- What are the best and worst ends of that scale?
- Was this specific colorway tested?
- Does the listed result represent an individual result, a minimum across the collection, or a general supplier claim?
If those details are missing, treat the fabric’s behavior in your room as unresolved. Window coverings and occasional changes in cushion position may reduce uneven exposure, but they do not convert an undocumented textile into a documented fade-resistant one.
Abrasion results must stay within the same test system
Abrasion tests repeatedly rub a textile to assess its response to friction and wear. They can be useful when a sofa will be occupied frequently, but the raw number is meaningful only within its test method.
Martindale cycles
As explained in Kvadrat’s guide, Martindale testing rubs the fabric against a specified textile under a defined load and movement. Results are commonly reported as cycles or rubs. The endpoint and intended-use category should be included or available from the supplier.
Wyzenbeek double rubs
Wyzenbeek testing uses a back-and-forth rubbing action, with one movement in each direction forming a double rub. The method is frequently encountered on North American upholstery specifications.
The Fabric Resource comparison of Martindale and Wyzenbeek correctly highlights the practical limitation: the systems are not directly interchangeable. Its suggested numerical shopping thresholds are commercial guidance rather than universal standards, so they should not be treated as guaranteed household cutoffs.
There is no defensible consumer conversion such as “one Martindale cycle equals one Wyzenbeek double rub.” Compare Martindale with Martindale and Wyzenbeek with Wyzenbeek, while checking that the abradant, load, endpoint, and fabric condition also align.
A high abrasion result does not establish:
- low pilling;
- high lightfastness;
- resistance to pet-claw snags;
- stain release or cleanability;
- tear strength or seam integrity;
- comfort against skin; or
- a service life measured in years.
The AHFA document addresses seam breaking strength, seam integrity, shedding, tear strength, fiber migration, and nap loss separately from abrasion-related performance. That separation matters: upholstery is a system, and a strong surface-abrasion figure cannot compensate for every other possible failure mode.
Fiber content is context, not a durability verdict
A fiber label tells you what the textile contains. It does not, by itself, tell you how the completed upholstery will perform.
Two fabrics with the same nominal fiber percentages may differ in yarn construction, weave or knit, pile, density, backing, finish, dye, and surface texture. Those differences can affect pilling, appearance change, snagging, shedding, and abrasion behavior. The AHFA document’s separate treatment of fiber migration, shedding, and pile loss illustrates why finished-fabric performance involves more than the fiber name.
Do not assume that a synthetic fiber automatically prevents pilling, that a natural fiber must wear quickly, or that a blend guarantees the advantages of every component. The supplied sources do not support such broad rankings.
When available, prioritize results produced on the exact finished upholstery over an unsupported claim based on fiber content. The same applies to “performance fabric,” “family friendly,” and similar marketing labels. Ask which named tests support the label and what important characteristics remain untested.
Match each result to your likely failure mode
There is no sound way to combine pilling, lightfastness, and abrasion into one universal sofa-fabric score. Start with the change that would bother your household most.

Save the evidence before ordering
For each fabric under serious consideration:
- Request the technical sheet for the exact upholstery and colorway.
- Save or photograph the sheet, including its date or version if shown.
- Highlight each test method, result, scale, and endpoint.
- Compare only results produced with matching methods and reporting units.
- Ask the seller to explain missing details in writing.
- Keep the response with your order records, especially if a performance claim affects your choice.
A physical swatch remains useful for judging color, texture, weave openness, and how the fabric looks in your room. It cannot reproduce years of wear, and manually rubbing or scratching a small sample is not equivalent to a standardized test.
Frequently asked questions
Is a higher sofa fabric pilling rating always better?
Only within a confirmed scale where higher grades represent less pilling. A grade cannot be interpreted safely without its method and scale direction, and results from different procedures may not be comparable. Even a favorable grade does not promise a pill-free sofa.
Can Martindale cycles be converted into Wyzenbeek double rubs?
No reliable universal conversion is established by the supplied sources. Keep the systems separate and compare fabrics tested with the same method, conditions, and endpoint.
Does a high abrasion rating mean a sofa fabric will not pill?

The practical decision rule is straightforward: favor the fabric with a documented test method that addresses your household’s main risk, then check whether you can accept the remaining uncertainties in appearance, care, construction, and cost. If the method is missing or two test systems do not match, leave the comparison unresolved rather than awarding the larger number a false advantage.
